Action now closed: ask your MP to act this Wednesday 10 October
A huge thank you to the 3,431 of you who wrote to your MPs about the new Asylum accommodation contracts.
In a matter of weeks, the Government will sign contracts determining asylum accommodation for the next 10 years.
This is an opportunity to address serious failings in the current accommodation provided under COMPASS contracts, despite recommendations from various parliamentary bodies and organisations like Freedom from Torture. Housing can be poorly maintained, filthy, crowded, inappropriate and occasionally dangerous for vulnerable people like torture survivors.
We know that the needs of asylum seekers are currently neglected and policies to protect torture survivors are not consistently applied. These failings can exacerbate existing mental health problems, undermine torture survivors' sense of safety and impede their recovery.
This Wednesday 10 October, MPs will debate the contracts in the House of Commons. Will you ask your MP to be there?
We need as many MPs as possible to attend to make sure the contract renewal process is properly scrutinised and that new contracts adequately meet the needs of asylum seekers.
