My name is Marcel, I’m a science teacher from West Africa. I’ve always been a great supporter of human rights. Back in my home country, I wanted to stand for education, opportunity, and democracy but I was picked out and arrested. I was detained and tortured for three or four weeks. I thought I was going to die. I still have the scars today.
I managed to escape and found sanctuary in the UK, but I was haunted by the ghosts of the past. The pain of being so far from home, feeling so isolated and not knowing how to communicate with those around me was incredibly alienating.
When I first walked through the door of the Bread Group at Freedom from Torture, I was very quiet and withdrawn. But coming to the Bread Group changed my life.
When you knead the bread, you take all the tension you have inside you and knead it into the dough. You don’t really understand how baking bread can help you until you do it yourself! Kneading the bread, making recipes, making shapes with the dough is like meditating or doing sport.
Today, will you be a part of our Bread Group and help it continue? Without your kindness, torture survivors like me won't be able to benefit from this incredible opportunity to bake, heal and make friends.
After donating, don’t forget to download the recipe book we created especially for you. It includes traditional recipes from all over the world. I hope you like it!
Thank you for being there for me and the rest of the Bread Group.
